Coronavirus and force majeure: What is the impact on commercial contracts?

 

The coronavirus pandemic has fundamentally changed the way we live, work and, crucially, do business. In recent weeks , companies have been scrambling to determine whether they have a valid 鈥済et-out-of-jail-free鈥 card in the form of force majeure in their commercial contracts and we鈥檝e already seen the likes of  and  invoking the clause to attempt to relieve themselves of their obligations. 

What does it mean and how do we future-proof against similar pandemics in the future? What are the practical impacts of force majeure and how can you protect yourself in the future from its effects?
